We're interested in coffee shop design, atmosphere, and influence on the communities that use them. Why is it that coffee shops are so often the birthplace of creativity? When did coffee shops become cultural epicenters where people hear new music and cultivate ideas? What is it about coffee shops that has attracted generations of artist and writers? It can't only be because of caffeine, can it? The goal of this podcast is to delve deeper into the rich history, unique atmosphere, and creative allure of the coffee shop. What are the origins of The Coffee Shop Project?
The Coffee Shop Project started, fittingly, at Cafe Brasil in my hometown of Houston, Texas. I began waxing poetic to my best friend about everything that fascinated me about coffee shops. Their rich history, their unique atmosphere, and the kind of conversations and ideas that can only be sparked in a coffee shop setting. After this conversation, I realized what I needed to do. It took me another six months for the first episode to appear, but here we are, and I'm so glad.
Will you ever feature coffee shops outside of Cedar Rapids?
Yes! I have roots (and travel plans) in many different places, and as I move around I will feature coffee shops in Iowa City, Houston, Florence, and London.
Why don't you talk about coffee more?
There are books, blogs, websites, and yes, podcasts devoted to coffee. They cover everything from growing to brewing, and I felt like that base had been pretty much covered. My true fascination lies with the coffee shop, a completely unique space whose influence on our culture has become so much more than just the beverage it serves.
When is the next episode coming out?
